Building a business website is one of the most solid and stable forms of making a living Online.
If you’re just starting out on this venture, then creating a business website with the right small business website builder is essential in the productivity, and eventually, profitability of your Online business.
Before you go ahead with building a website, make sure you read the difference between building a blog and building a website.
You know a lot about a certain subject and want to show your authority by creating hundreds of web pages with your own content. You have patience to build a real business and can wait for the money to come in after a few months of starting.
What Exactly Is A Themed Content Website?
A themed content site is a business website based on one particular topic which you know a lot about and have a keen interest in. This could be a hobby, your career, offline business, parental skills, life skills, health problems, illnesses & diseases, travel… the list could go on and on.
Content sites aren’t that dissimilar to building a large blog and have been around a lot longer than blogs. However, the difference is that you aren’t under any pressure to write useful blog posts for your eagerly awaiting readers on a daily basis. You can only write a few pages a week if you like and build your site up slowly over time.
Attributes Needed To Be Successful
Creating a business website takes a lot of patience, determination and drive to succeed. This is definitely not a ‘get rich quick’ approach and you really need to understand this before you start on this journey.
You need to think of building a website business as the ‘tortoise and hare’ race. Take the slow tortoise approach and you will win in the end!
You Need To Have:
Stamina – To write literally hundreds of web pages over a period of two – four years
Determination – To stick with it though hard times and un-motivated days
Drive – To keep focused on your end results (probably money!)
Writing Ability – To write about the topic and sub-topics you love
Technical Ability – To use a small business website builder and upload pages to a web hosting account
Learning Ability – To learn how to write to pre-sell and warm your customers to make a purchase
Patience – It will likely take two years for your site to be fully grown and mature enough to warrant thousands of visitors per day
A Business Mindset – To understand that you are building a business website and not just ‘putting up’ a website like all the opportunists!
An Awareness – To keep on top of your niche and write about relevant, up-to-date and even newsworthy topics
An Understanding – That you will be writing and creating a business website without any income for at least the first year. The second year you should start to see monthly profits and the third year you should be earning thousands of dollars/pounds a month.
Content Site Basics
Building a business website basics fall under the similar start-up plan as that of blogging.
Choose Your Niche
You must choose a niche you have a lot of knowledge about or are willing to learn about. You must have a passion for this niche as you are going to be ‘friends’ with it for years and years to come.
You simply cannot create a website business around a topic you aren’t that interested in. You will eventually get bored, lose motivation and end up quitting. This will result in a waste of money but also a waste of manual hours, and months of hard work will go down the drain (don’t ask me how I know that!)
Choose Your Small Business Website Builder
You need to choose a website building platform to write and upload your pages onto the web. This is VERY important – you must choose a website builder which is robust, reliable and will do the job for you.
You are setting up and running a business asset, not just uploading any old website onto the web.
I have two suggestions here.
There are two very popular small business website builders on the market both of which I use and have done so for the last few years.
It depends on how ‘web savvy’ you are as to which one you choose, but please keep an open mind when reading and learning about each one as they are both brilliant but are also very different.
XSitePro is a fantastic website builder which has many features integrated into it. Basically it’s just like typing into a Word processing document and you can then integrate various features with a click of the mouse button.
I use XSitePro to build my one-page sales letter type websites. For e.g. if I am selling an ebook, I will write these type of websites to promote and sell that ebook .
My XSitePro Sites:
However, you absolutely can build large content websites with this website builder as it has everything included that you need to do so. I used to have quite a large weight loss site using XSitePro (yes, another one I let go!)
XSitePro has a one-off payment to purchase it and you will then have to purchase your domain name and web hosting separate to this.
This is what I used to build my two themed content websites with*. I chose to use this instead of XSitePro because it is a complete package. Included in the package is your domain name and web hosting, so there is no need to worry or purchase any extras.
SBI allows people who have never built a web page before to do so with their easy ‘block builder’ module.
However, if you have built websites before, it also allows you to upload your own customized web pages too. It’s definitely a package for both beginners and intermediates alike.
Also included in the package is:
- A keyword research tool which is THE most important aspect of building a business website, this should be your best friend;
- Web mail, which is your email client for your website;
- Newsletter (Ezines) mailer and autoresponders;
- Search and Find It! tools;
- The most comprehensive guide with videos you will ever see;
- A forum which I would personally pay separately to be part of as the information found within it is absolutely invaluable;
- RSS feed and mini Blog;
- Traffic and Search Engine statistics;
- Tips & Techniques Headquarter;
- Monetization Headquarter.
Are You A Mum / Mom?
If you’re a mum/mom wanting to earn some extra money from home, then read how you can contribute financially to your household while staying at home for your kids – SiteBuildIt! works for work from home mums (WFHM).
As briefly mentioned above, keyword research is the most important aspect of building a website. Think about it, if you have a site about ‘Electric Heaters’ and a visitor types the keyword “indoor electric heaters” into the Google search box you would want your website to be the no.1 website at the top of Google for the keyword “indoor electric heaters”.
Therefore, you have to carry out keyword research for each and every page of your website so each of your pages can be found on the first page of Google for it’s particular keyword.
In order to find and use these keywords on your website, you need to use a keyword research tool to find the best keywords with the highest Demand (the number of people searching for that particular keyword phrase) and the lowest Supply (competing web pages showing in Google).
If you decide to purchase XSitePro, then you will need to use or buy a keyword research tool to help you find these important phrases. However, if you use SBI then this is all built within the software and no extra cost is necessary.
Promoting Your Website
The last part of creating a business website is to promote it. There are a variety of ways you can do this, but basically what you want is FREE traffic to your website and the best way to get this is by getting listed at the top of the search engines for your keyword phrases.
To get listed at the top you need to SEO your website pages (search engine optimize) and also acquire many backlinks to your site. What I mean by this is that you need many other websites linking back and pointing to your site.
In the eyes of the search engines, this shows them that your site is popular and must be good because you have many other sites pointing back to you. The search engines then reward you by listing your site higher and higher in their search results.
However, even though free search engine traffic is fantastic (if you can get it as its not guaranteed), you should never rely on this as a business model to get visitors to your site. You need to learn Internet marketing and get traffic from other sources such as social media, content distribution and guest posting.
Things You Should Know
Both XSitePro and SBI! are great for complete beginners, so either one is a good choice. However, SBI! is a total and complete package as discussed above.
I love XSitePro as it’s just so easy to use. Don’t just take my word for it, visit and read the dozens of testimonials of XSitePro happy users.
A recent study revealed that 62% of SBI! sites were in the Top 3% of all sites on the Internet. Read about real life case studies and proof that SBI! websites work!
* I sold my two themed SBI! content sites (Face Skincare Tips and Anti Aging Therapy) in the summer of 2012. Unfortunately, the new owners (fellow SBI! owners) decided they could not find the time to keep these websites on and they let the domains expire.
I was disappointed to find this out because I had 100 pages on Face Skincare Tips and 60 pages on Anti Aging Therapy and I really wanted them to go to a good home to build on their success.
